Before you begin, please check you have the correct shade of Mini-palette to suite your skin tone. Remember it is only the approximate shades you are looking for; you may need to mix the colours in the Mini-palette to find your exact match.
The key to cosmetic camouflage is to find the correct colour match for your skin. You may find your match straight away or it may take several attempts. We therefore recommend that you have a practise before actually attempting to cover a scar, tattoo or other skin condition.
1. Colour match
Make sure that you are in a room with lots of natural light or even in the open air, as artificial light will give a false impression. Select a colour from the Mini-palette that you think most resembles your skin tone. Warm this up in the Mini-palette by rubbing it continuously with a brush, sponge or even your finger, in a circular motion. Once warm and malleable apply the cream to the skin with a stippling or dabbing action, as this will give a more natural appearance. Depending how this looks you may wish to try a totally different colour or add to the existing colour, with other creams that have pink or yellow tints. Do this a little bit at a time and try to remember or record what colours you are using each time you try. If your mix becomes too extensive or confusing then consider starting over with a different base colour. The camouflage cream will stay malleable until you apply the fixing powder so you can take your time. When you think you have the right mix of colours, have another practise to see if you can reproduce it.
2. Correcting dark areas
The skin tone colours in the Mini-palette are sufficient on their own to cover most dark areas. However if you are trying to cover a tattoo, beard growth or an area that is particularly dark in colour, you may need to “correct” the colour first. In your Mini-palette will be the most common correcting colour (D32). When applied, this will correct the dark colour to a more neutral shade. Simply apply the correcting colour, with a small makeup brush or sponge over the area and then fix the cream as shown in Step 4.
3. Camouflage cream application
Using the techniques in Step 1 apply your chosen colours to the area you wish to camouflage directly on top of any correcting colour or skin plastic, if you have used these. Continue to a apply the cream until 2cm past the edge of the area you wish to cover then fade it away into the surrounding skin. Once you are satisfied with the colour and the coverage, fix the cream as explained in Step 6,
4. Fixing the cream
Generously apply the fixing powder to the camouflage cream using a powder puff, pressing down slightly on to the cream. Ensure you apply the powder over the whole area where the camouflage cream has been applied. Wait 5-10 minutes for this to dry and set, then lightly brush off any excess. If you discover you have missed an area you can add further cream and reapply the fixing powder again. For additional fixing power and water resistance consider fixing the cream further with Dermacolor Fixing Spray.(Included in Max kits).
5. Finishing touches and advanced techniques
Remember that skin is rarely a consistent colour, for example the front of the arm may be darker than the back or the face may be darker than the neck. For greater authenticity consider using different colours and matching the camouflage to the surrounding skin. Items such as freckles or other skin characteristics can also be replicated with the use of different colours and a fine brush. If you try this remember to fix the camouflage cream once again.
6. Additional makeup
Additional dry make-up can be applied on top of the camouflage cream if required. Touching up should not be necessary however in areas that are prone to rubbing it is possible that a second application may be required. For extra hold, consider using our Fixing Spray in addition to the fixing powder.
For effective removal of the camouflage cream we recommend you use our cleansing cream or another suitable make-up remover. If these are not available, use warm soapy water.
